The city of Baelo Claudia emerged in the 2nd century BC in the strategic area of the Strait of Gibraltar, within the municipality of Tarifa. It gained importance for its preserved and salted fish products, including garum, a sauce that was exported throughout the Roman Empire.
Declared a National Historic Monument, Baelo Claudia is designed as a Roman factory-town, remarkable for its well-preserved state and construction adhering to classical Roman standards. It showcases a meticulously planned and rational urban layout, making it a striking example of Roman architectural ingenuity.
The ruins of Baelo Claudia appear in the first episode of Season 5 of ‘The Crown’, depicted as an archaeological site visited by Princess Diana and her family during a trip to Italy.
