The Chapel of Jesús Nazareno in Cádiz is attached to the Church of the Convent of Santa María, the first convent built in Cádiz. The chapel was constructed between 1616 and 1617, following plans by Alonso de Vandelvira. Its altarpiece, made of gilded wood, dates back to 1757, with its central section showcasing the image of Jesús Nazareno, one of the city’s most cherished icons.
A fascinating anecdote surrounds the authorship of the statue: for many years, it was attributed to the Italian painter Jácome Verlardi, who had settled in Cádiz. However, during a restoration carried out in 1996, a note was discovered inside the head of Jesús Nazareno. It contained the inscription “Andrés C.,” revealing the true creator of this beloved image.
