It was inaugurated in October 1933 on Avenida José Ortega y Gasset in the Cruz de Humilladero neighborhood. It was one of the largest centers of repression and held the largest number of prisoners during the Civil War and the postwar period. It was permanently closed in 2009. On November 10, 2014, it was recognized as a Site of Historical Memory of Andalusia.

The Old Provincial Prison of Malaga was the location chosen to film the interiors of Episode 6 in Season 4 of ‘Black Mirror’ titled ‘Black Museum.’

In Season 1 of ‘Warrior Nun’, the old prison doesn’t exactly function as a prison, but rather as a unique space where a peculiar rave is held.
