The Pasarela de la Cartuja is a bridge that spans the Guadalquivir River in Seville, built for the 1992 Universal Exposition. On the left bank, it starts at Calle Torneo (in the San Vicente neighborhood), and on the right bank, it connects to the Camino de los Descubrimientos on the Isla de la Cartuja, near the Monastery of Santa María de las Cuevas, which served as the Royal Pavilion during Expo ’92.
The bridge was designed by Fritz Leonhardt and Luis Viñuela Rueda, and constructed in 1991 in preparation for the exposition. During Expo ’92, it was intended exclusively for pedestrian use. Since 2004, however, it has also been open to vehicular traffic.
This is where the car ride along the Camino de los Descubrimientos and the Cartuja footbridge takes place in the movie ‘After’ by Alberto Rodríguez. Since it was a nighttime shoot and to ensure the lighting was appropriate, the production team requested the turning off and on of certain streetlights along the route and at the location where the vehicle stopped.
