Plaza del Mercado de Jerez is located within the old Andalusian medina, in the San Mateo neighborhood, one of the six districts of the city established after its conquest by Alfonso X in the 13th century. This area housed some of the most prominent families of the old Jerez nobility since the Middle Ages.
In the square and its surroundings, several heritage sites of interest can be found: the Municipal Archaeological Museum, which was once the noble house of Don Pedro López de Carrizosa y Riquelme, and later the residence of the Santander wine merchant Juan Sánchez López de la Torre; a Renaissance marble fountain adorned with dolphin sculptures and symbolic elements; the Riquelme Palace, whose façade is one of the jewels of the city’s Renaissance architecture; and the Church of San Mateo, which blends Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements.
Around the square, which retains much of its medieval urban layout, visitors can also explore the Fundador wineries (formerly Domecq), which have been operating since the 18th century, or the fascinating Rivero Art Gallery, located in the Tradición wineries, housing works by artists such as Zurbarán, El Greco, Goya, and Velázquez.

The Vineyard (Guillem Morales, Alberto Ruiz Rojo y Patricia Font, 2021)
Plaza del Mercado appears in numerous sequences of the series ‘The Vineyard’, as the Municipal Archaeological Museum was used as the house of Mauro Larrea in Jerez.
