The Plaza del Triunfo is located in the centre of a group of World Heritage buildings: the Archivo General de Indias, the Real Alcázar of Seville and the Cathedral of Seville. This irregularly shaped square was called ‘Plazuela de la Lonja’ after the Archivo de Indias, but since the 18th century it has been called ‘Plaza del Triunfo’. It is the site of a Baroque-style shrine called the Templete del Triunfo de Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio, with an image of the Virgin and Child inside, built in 1757 to commemorate the Lisbon Earthquake of 1755.
