The Santa María Polo Club built its first ground in Sotogrande, the mythical luxury resort on the coast of Cadiz, in 1965, thanks to the efforts of Enrique Zobel. Back in 1967 tournaments began to be held there, mainly between families and friends, but ever since its foundation it has never ceased to invest heavily in the sport and is now perceived as one of the most important clubs in Europe.

In Season 4 of ‘The Crown’ the polo club’s exclusive ‘Puente de Hierro’ facilities were used as the stage for the polo match which Charles took part in while he was staying in Sydney. During the match he suffered a fall but the public were more interested in asking him about Diana.
