One of the squares with the highest heritage density in the city, also known as Plaza de San Dionisio, Plaza del Cabildo, or Plaza de Escribanos, due to its historical connection with the San Dionisio Parish, which has presided over the square since the 14th century. In the Middle Ages, it housed the scribes’ offices, the Cabildo from 1575, and beautiful examples of Jerez’s neoclassical civil architecture. In this area stood the most important Andalusian-era buildings—except for the Alcázar—such as the Alcaicería (where silk was sold), the alhóndigas (where cereals and foodstuffs were sold), and the customs house.
Today, in this square, you can find the Cabildo Viejo, a beautiful example of Jerez’s Renaissance architecture, the Church of San Dionisio, and the Palace of the Countess of Casares. The latter is a neoclassical building designed by architect Balbino Marrón, featuring an interesting alternation of pilasters framing the openings and the central balcony, adding sobriety, order, and rhythm to the composition.

The Vineyard (Guillem Morales, Alberto Ruiz Rojo y Patricia Font, 2021)
The façade of the Palace of the Countess of Casares is the house where Soledad, the protagonist of ‘The Vineyard’, resides while in Jerez. The square appears several times from different angles throughout the series.
