The Mercado de Abastos de Barbate is undoubtedly one of the most stunning markets in the province of Cádiz. It features a single rectangular floor, with high ceilings and large windows that allow plenty of natural light to flood in. In 2018, the market was beautifully renovated, transforming its ceiling and upper walls into a colorful marine-inspired work of art. This artistic masterpiece includes depictions of a Phoenician temple, coral reefs, and various marine species, with tuna being particularly prominent.
The true spectacle, however, lies in its stalls, which showcase majestic atún rojo from the region alongside two native species—the romerete, resembling grouper, and the lobito, also known as marrajo in other areas.
In the first episode of ‘The Girls at the Back’, the five friends visit this unique market to shop. As they navigate the bustling stalls filled with fish, vegetables, and meats, each of them reflects on the challenge they have just committed to. Olga, meanwhile, has an intriguing encounter while waiting in line at one of the stalls.
