It is one of the most popular neighborhoods in Seville, known for its typical narrow streets, its stately houses, flower-filled patios, and the charm and legends that surround it. Originally, it was a Jewish quarter, enclosed by a wall with three gates: one leading to Mesón del Moro Street, one near the Church of San Nicolás, and one at the Puerta de la Carne.
Some of the neighborhood’s most emblematic spots include Calle Mateos Gago, Plaza de Doña Elvira, Plaza de la Alianza (which borders the Alcázar walls), Plaza de los Venerables, Callejón del Agua, Patio Banderas, Plaza de Santa Cruz, and Refinadores.
The streets of the neighborhood have served as the backdrop for countless films and TV series. In Vicente Aranda’s ‘Carmen’, the protagonist traverses many of its alleys. Those same streets were also the setting for the iconic chase scene in the film ‘Nobody Knows Anybody’ by Mateo Gil.
