Located at the foot of Sierra Nevada and very close to the Alpujarra, 60 kilometres far from the city of Granada, Guadix is a city with plenty of history. Occupied since Prehistory, it has been inhabited by Iberians, Romans and Arabs until it was conquered by the Christians in 1489. Furthermore, it is very important due to its rich patrimony, specially monuments like the Cathedral or the Alcazaba and its cave houses. In addition, it has been the scenery for many international cinematographic productions.

For the shooting of “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade“, Guadix station was transformed to recreate a market in the Turkish city of Iskenderun, named in the film as Alexandretta, which was the capital of Hatay’s sultanate. The station was garnished with fruit and vegetables stands, chickens, chariots pulled by donkeys, four dromedaries rigged with travel implements, German vehicles from the 40s and men dressed in the Turkish way. More than 150 extras took part in the shooting of these scenes, that took place within the station platform where a locomotive and four wagons were used.

In the Sierra de Alfaguara, Harrison Ford and Sean Connery shot some scenes of “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade“, in the crossroad between Las Mimbres and the village of Prado Negro, in the municipality of Huétor-San Millán.

In “Reds“, the surrounding area of Guadix, a landscape that reminded the Russian steppe, was the background used to shoot the assault of the last bastion of the White Army against the train where Reed travelled, together with some of the leaders of the triumphant revolution, to Moscow

Between Llano de La Calahorra and Rambla del Agua, a sequence of “Reds“ was shot specifically the one where a locomotive, garnished for the occasion, and several wagons adorned with vibrant and colored drawings referred to the Bolshevik Army and the revolution head to the city of Baku, in the Caucasus, towards a territory guarded by soldiers of the White Army.
