Directed by Jaime de Armiñán and starring Paco Rabal, the series ‘Juncal’ (TVE, 1989) captured the true essence of the city of Sevilla. Some scenes were shot in the train station of Plaza de Armas, Pérez Galdós and Mateos Gago Streets, and inside some local neighbourhoods located in Castilla and Betis Streets; it also covered the bullfighting quarter of El Arenal, its bars and taverns, and specially, the bullring of La Maestranza.
The bullring has not only appeared in ‘Bread, Love and Andalusia’. Also in other films such as ‘Fiesta Brava’ (1959, Italy), ‘That Obscure Object of Desire’ (1977, France), ‘The Orange Girl’ (2008, Norway) and ‘Night and Day’ (2009, USA).
In ‘Jalisco canta en Sevilla’ the surroundings of the square is unbeatable for Carmen Sevilla to sing Tarantela Sevillana. The fact is that La Maestranza is not only about bulls. Throughout the years it has witnessed many carriage horse exhibitions, concerts and flamenco shows, among many others.
The bullring of La Maestranza is situated in Arenal, a quarter in Sevilla. It was built in the XVIIIth century. The architectonic style of the bullring is late-Baroque, characteristic from the second part of the XVIIIth century. In the inside, the building hosts the Museo Taurino and the chapel of the bullfighters.
