Zahara de los Atunes was, until the end of the 20th century, a small and charming fishing village situated between the white sandy beach and crystal-clear waters of Bahía de la Plata and the Cachón River. This village, which belongs to the municipality of Barbate, has in recent years become a prominent tourist destination in the province of Cádiz, thanks to its beaches, unique charm, and rich gastronomic culture centered around the almadraba tuna.
In fact, tuna fishing and its significant almadraba are the origins of this village. The Palacio de las Pilas, of which only the walls remain, served as a defensive castle, the residence of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia and Chanca, and a facility for tuna processing and salting.
The locals of Zahara claim that their river, the Cachón, is the origin of the word cachondeo (meaning “fun” or “merrymaking”), as its banks were a popular spot for all kinds of parties and celebrations.
These locations are recurring in ‘The Girls at the Back’. The white sand, dunes, and hypnotic turquoise sea set the stage for the protagonists’ beach days and leisure moments, witnessing their secrets and heartfelt conversations.
