Simón, a young aspiring writer, makes a living designing crossword puzzles for a Sevillian newspaper, while Sapo, his roommate, scrapes by as a private English tutor. One day, Simón receives a threatening message on his answering machine urging him to include the word “adversary” in his next crossword puzzle, the one for Palm Sunday. It all seems like a joke in poor taste, but Simón gives in to the threat without quite knowing why. The result is a series of attacks on the eve of the last Holy Week of the millennium. Terrified by the consequences of his decision, he decides to investigate the events with the help of María, a colleague at the newspaper assigned to the case. Little by little, he discovers, horrified, how a series of coincidental circumstances incriminate him.
