In Imperial Spain during the 17th century, Diego Alatriste, a brave soldier in the service of His Majesty, fights in a war in the cold lands of Flanders. In a Dutch ambush, his friend and comrade in arms, Balboa, is mortally wounded. Alatriste hears one last request from his friends’ lips and promises to fulfil it: he will take care of his son Íñigo and keep him away from the soldier profession.
Upon his return to Madrid, Alatriste encounters a moribund Empire. Philip IV’s court, dominated by intrigues and corruption, is managed as the Count-Duke of Olivares pleases, with the support of the Spanish Inquisition.
Alatriste, who scrapes to make a living by selling his services as a swordsman, will be involved in one of these intrigues when he is hired, along with another mercenary, Gualterio Malatesta, to kill two mysterious characters who are travelling incognito to Madrid. Alatriste’s fate will be marked when, sensing something shady with the sinister mission, he decides to spare the two foreigners’ lives and faces Malatesta, who intended to finish the job. That night he will gain an enemy for life.
